Walk-in vitamin injections

Vitamin injection therapy

B12, vitamin D and nutrient injections on a walk-in basis during business hours. No appointment needed.

We do micronutrient testing in our clinic, and many patients with deficiencies are already taking oral supplements. Nutrient injections can help overcome those deficiencies.

Why vitamin injections?

  • Better absorption. Oral supplements must first be broken down in the digestive tract, and low-quality nutrients and fillers can reduce how much reaches the bloodstream. Injections deliver nutrients directly into the body’s tissues at an exact dose.
  • Faster onset. Oral supplements can take hours to be digested, absorbed and metabolized. Injected nutrients are available to the body right away.
  • No first-pass metabolism. Oral supplements are heavily metabolized by the gut and liver before they reach circulation. Injections avoid this, so more of the nutrient reaches its target tissues.
  • Less frequent dosing. Intramuscular injections create a depot effect, releasing nutrients steadily over time, so they’re needed less often than daily pills.

Vitamin injection FAQs

What is vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is an essential, water-soluble vitamin that your body doesn’t make; it must come from your diet. To use it, the body absorbs it in the ileum of the small intestine with the help of intrinsic factor, a substance secreted by the stomach.

Why get a B12 injection?

Injections bypass the digestive tract. As a result, injectable B12 has a direct route to the cells, is readily metabolized, and you’ll feel the benefits faster.

Benefits of B12 injections can include increased energy and metabolism, enhanced neurological and vascular health, fewer seasonal and environmental allergies, less irritability (PMS, hormonal imbalances), improved athletic endurance, and help stabilizing symptoms of depression, anxiety and mood disorders. They may also benefit patients with nervous system or endocrine disorders such as MS, diabetes, seizures, restless leg syndrome, thyroid disorders and adrenal fatigue.

What are the symptoms of B12 deficiency?

Fatigue, nerve pain, sleep disturbances, mood disorders, cognitive decline and tremors.

Who is most likely to have low B12?

Vegetarians, vegans, people 50 and older, people who drink alcohol, people with digestive issues, anyone regularly taking medications known to affect B12 absorption (such as Prilosec or Tums), and anyone who recently had a medical procedure using nitrous oxide.

Do I need an appointment for an injection?

No. We don’t schedule appointments just for injections; they’re offered on a walk-in basis. You can also add an injection to a scheduled appointment. Most people are in and out within 5–20 minutes, though it varies day to day.

I’m new to injections. Which shot should I get?

We’ll do a brief intake, listening to your health concerns, allergies and goals, and recommend a shot for that visit. Recommendations may vary week to week.

A walk-in only allows for a 5-minute consultation. To talk with Dr. Malcolm in depth about specific health issues and goals, schedule an appointment.

Who gives the injections?

Dr. Janine Malcolm, ND, L.Ac. administers injections at Niwot Natural Medicine.

Can kids get B12 injections?

We don’t give injections to anyone under 13. Patients under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian. Children should see Dr. Malcolm during a patient care appointment.

How much B12 do I need?

Everyone’s optimal level, measured with a blood test, is unique. On average a value above 600 pg/ml is sufficient, but we prefer above 900 pg/ml for optimal wellness. To get labs, we recommend measuring B12, homocysteine and MMA together; schedule an appointment with Dr. Malcolm if you’d like her help.

Which foods contain B12?

Large amounts are found in liver, beef, salmon, trout, tuna, sardines and clams; smaller amounts in eggs, yogurt, cheese and fortified cereals.

How soon will I notice results, and how often should I come?

Most people feel results with the first shot, unless they’re significantly deficient. How long injected B12 stays in your body varies with your lifestyle and whether you were deficient to begin with.

We recommend one injection a week for five weeks to start. Then review your progress and goals with Dr. Malcolm to set a schedule for future injections.

What form of B12 do you use, and where does it come from?

We use methylcobalamin and hydroxocobalamin, the most bioactive forms of injectable B12, sourced from compounding pharmacies.

Are there side effects?

A small bruise or soreness at the injection site is normal; the soreness goes away in 1–3 days. There are no known toxic side effects when B12 is given at appropriate levels. Allergic reactions can happen with any intramuscular injection, and our staff are trained and prepared to treat any reaction.

Please tell us about any medications you take before your injection.
